Hello, 1st post, please go easy...

We have a 14 week old Dachshund girl called Phoebe who doesn't like to walk on her lead. She just stops dead and refuses to go anywhere, I have a method were I carry her to the lodge nearby and put her down off the lead and she eventually reluctantly follows and walks really well, once she thinks she is on the homeward stretch she will walk on the lead but only if she thinks she is on her way home.

She is really nervous outside she shakes and cries a lot and does not seem to enjoy it at all, she will socialise with other dogs, she has had all her jabs and is otherwise fine.

We had a boxer who loved walking so we are not used to this lol...

Thanks for reading.

Some ideas. 1. Is it cold where you are? Maybe she needs a sweater or fleece jacket out doors? 2. You could practice with the leash in your home, rewarding her with a tiny treat such as a piece of carrot or a green bean, or a piece of kibble at increasing intervals. When she does well in the house, use treats out doors when she walks maybe 500 feet and increase the distance between treats. Let her know you have the treats and only give her one when she increases the distance. Praise her to the skies when you give her one. 3. Also sound really excited and happy when you announce you are going for a walk. 4. If you have a dog park, that is a good and safe place to get her used to being out doors on a leash. 5.Get a nice soft harness such as a Puppia and try that on walks. Make sure it fits her well.

Make her like the outside. You say she is nervous. Have treats with you or her favourit toy.

She is a young dog and young dogs are supposed to just walk around the neighborhood to get to know it. I dont know how fare you take her but let her stay where she feels safe and praise that. If you make her feel safe with you and you always give her treats when she walks with you, maybe her stress will go away.

Keep distance from things she feel unsafe around. Other dogs? Let her stay at a distance where she doesnt react. Praise and soon she will feel safe to go a bit closer next time.

Let it take time. She is so young.

How are things going? Can we have an update?
Being in Canada we don't do walkies in the winter. I do have treats in my hand and walk my dogs, without leash, in the house. They are supposed to stay on my left and turn with me, stay beside me. They get treats for doing this and lots of lovings. It's fun for them.
