Digging! How to stop it?

Hi, we've two young Dachsies - 16 months old - and they are destroying the garden! They have dug any number of holes.
It's not always clear what they're agter, at first I assumed they were trying to dig up snails, but they've also destroyed a flower bed where they seem to be after the roots of plants.
Can anyone recommend an effective, but safe, deterrent?
I don't fancy using pepper powder, for example, in case it gets in their eyes. But there must be something that works - any ideas?
Thanks in advance for any help on this!👍🤝

Dachshunds dig. It's kind of what they do. They only thing I've found to keep them from destroying my garden is to watch them carefully. I had one that loved to dig. We finally reached an agreement that if he only dug under the split leaf philodendren, I'd leave him alone. Eventually, he stopped even than.

I also had one larger mix who was 6 months when I adopted him. He dug up the whole backyard before he stopped. It sort of looked like a moonscape out there. The good news was we didn't have to mow often!

(I know the original post is about 4 months old, but)
First, daily walks and exercise may tire them out a bit, but along with that try cornering-off a section of your backyard similar to a raised flower bed. To build, use four- 2" x 6" x 6ft boards, or cut down length to whatever best fits in your yard. Place the boards on the 2" side, over flat dirt or grass in a square or rectangle. You'll need to nail or screw the boards together at the overlapping ends. Fill with a few bags of play sand and/or pea gravel and mix with some soil from your garden, to create a "Dachshund digging zone." Toss in and partially bury some of their toys at first till they start using it to dig. Praise and reward them after digging within their new play box. The only downside is if they start using it as a toilet area, or neighborhood cats start using it too. It's worth the small cost of four 2" x 6"x 6ft boards and a few bags of sand and pea gravel, compared to an entire yard being dug-up. If & when your hounds eventually give up digging altogether, you can turn it into a raised vegetable or flower garden👍
