    Supplements

Hi all! For those of you that feed homemade- what supplements do you give your doxie with their food? I'll be starting to wean Alaska onto a homemade diet today. It'll be a fish blend (recipe from JustFoodForDogs.com)- with cod, tilapia, russet potatoes, sweet potatoes, green beans...

    Crate training

He's probably not getting overfed. Small breed puppies usually eat around 3/4 to 1 cup of food per day. Alaska turns 12 weeks tomorrow and is fed 1/3 cup of food three times a day. She doesn't always finish her lunch though, which is fine. After 6 months of age, they'll start to eat less. Make...

What are your top 3 favorite dog breeds?

(aside from dachshunds) My top three are: Australian Shepherds Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever Collies Dachshunds are pretty much my exception of liking small dogs, although I agree with everyone else- they're much cheaper to care for!

    New Puppy need advice !

Ironically, Alaska loves her tag. The only one she has right now is her ID with my info on it (she'll get her license after being spayed at six months). But of course the only tags they had at the time were ones that were obnoxiously huge for doxie pups. She likes to pick up her tag while she's...

    Doesn't want to go out?!

As you know, Alaska was having the exact same thing happen this week, although I attribute it to the overwhelming amount of people distracting her. What I did to solve the solution was putting an x-pen in a corner of the apartment and covering the floor under it with potty pads. We leave an...

    Dachshund Service Dog

That sounds amazing! The three tasks I want her to learn to start with (after basic obedience) is fetching my phone when I ask because sometimes during a panic attack I need to make a call but can't get to my phone, licking my leg when I start getting antsy in class (usually I start tapping my...

    Dachshund Service Dog

Hello all! I've recently been informed that Alaska and I qualify as a service dog team, once she is fully trained to do so (which I'm anticipating to be in about a year or a year and a half). She'll be a psychiatric service dog, equipped to help me through anxiety and panic attacks caused by...

    Do Not Pet!!!

Amanda, Right now, Alaska is an emotional support animal. Originally her training plan was to get her Therapy Dog Certified, but I actually learned last evening that her and I qualify as a service dog team. Hopefully she'll be trained and certified in about a year. This is immensely helpful...

    Where should puppy sleep?

Some puppies sleep up to 18 or 20 hours a day. It's very normal. To be honest, at this stage, I love her best when she's asleep. :p

    Do Not Pet!!!

Hi everyone! Alaska and I have just moved into my college dorm over the weekend and she's getting quite a lot of attention here. For those of you who have been keeping up, she is my emotional support animal for my anxiety and PTSD. Within two years, I would like to have her Therapy Dog...

    New member, advice needed

It definitely sounds more like anxiety to me. If it were actual aggression, you would have no doubt about it. He's still a puppy and he's expected to still be a little nippy, especially in uncomfortable situations. My close friends has a german shepherd dog who is the sweetest pup you'll ever...

    New member, advice needed

Hello and welcome! When you have guests over, before you introduce them to Walter, give them treats so the second he comes up to smell them, they can give him treats as a friendly gesture. Let them feed him treats periodically throughout the night. Hopefully it can help change his mind on...

    Where should puppy sleep?

Alaska has been sleeping with me and can almost hold it all night. I have her on a late feeding schedule (10 AM, 4 PM, 10 PM) so she goes to bed at the same time as me (midnight ish) and sleeps a little later. She usually wakes me up to go out at 4 and 7 AM and then we sleep again until 10.

    Teeth brushing

There's a finger brush in my set, too. It's what I'm going to use as soon as my girl is big enough that my fingers can actually go into her mouth. :p she's only 8 1/2 weeks right now, so no teeth brushing yet. but soon we'll go to brushing every morning.

    Teeth brushing

If you go to a pet store, they sell doggie-specific tooth paste (human toothpast isn't so great for them) and they usually come with a toothbrush. I got a set of three at petsmart.
